A Guide to Getting Started with Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™

Are you just getting started with Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ (FPC)? We've created an entire webpage to help you as you begin your journey. Navigate to the Unpacking and Getting Started webpage to unpack, get acquainted with your materials, and get organized.

Once on the webpage, click on the section headers to reveal video tutorials, important links, and useful information. You will find:

  • A full tutorial on how to unpack your boxes

  • Directions to log into Online Resources

  • Numerous in-depth videos and free resources to help get you get acquainted with your new system(s) and book collection(s)

Let’s dive into what you’ll find underneath each header.

STEP 1

1. UNPACK

Once you receive your FPC boxes, navigate to the “UNPACK” section of the webpage. You’ll find unpacking video tutorials for each context, an Unpacking Guide PDF for easy printing, and an itemized unpacking list to make sure you received all items in your boxes.

STEP 22. LOG INTO ONLINE RESOURCES

After unpacking, you’ll want to log into your Online Resources account. Underneath the header “LOG INTO ONLINE RESOURCES” you’ll find a tutorial video for how to log in, as well as a video tour of the site. The video tour features what not to miss and helps you get acquainted with using the site.

STEP 3

3. GET TO KNOW YOUR MATERIALS

After you’ve unpacked and logged into your Online Resources account, it’s time to get familiar with your materials. Under the header “GET TO KNOW YOUR MATERIALS,” you’ll find “Getting Started” videos for each FPC instructional context. In these videos you will learn about the literacy context you’ve purchased including an overview of all materials, how to navigate the lessons, teaching suggestions, and other helpful tips. These videos are a great place to start before you begin teaching, and to refer back to when you have questions.

STEP 44. START PLANNING

Now that you’ve become acquainted with your materials, it’s time to start planning. Under the header “START PLANNING” you’ll find resources for implementing FPC, including:

Preparing for FPC: An Interactive Action Plan
This is a great tool for defining your vision and values, setting goals, getting to know FPC, and for planning your literacy time.

Free Implementation Support Course
This course is a more in-depth tutorial where you will learn how to get started with each instructional context and how to fit them all together. 

Instructional Plan for the First 8 Weeks
Refer to the Instructional Plan for your grade level to see what putting it all together could look like. You might even wish to use this plan as the sequence for your first 8 Weeks as you get familiar with FPC and teaching responsively to your students.

STEP 55. EXPLORE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT

Under the last header, “EXPLORE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT” you’ll find a collection of even more free resources to access. Here you’ll find “FPC in Action” videos for each instructional context, live webinars with authors Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas, as well as an overview of the website, fountasandpinnell.com.
